End of Life Care For Pets

Hospice - Elder Cat Receiving Care

At Southside Animal Hospital, we understand that saying goodbye to a beloved pet is one of the most difficult and emotional times a pet owner can face. Our compassionate team is here to support you every step of the way, offering guidance, comfort, and professional care to ensure your pet’s final chapter is filled with dignity and love.

Understanding End-of-Life Care

End-of-life care, sometimes referred to as palliative or hospice care, focuses on maintaining comfort, managing pain, and supporting your pet’s quality of life in their final days, weeks, or months. Our goal is to help your pet experience peace and comfort while helping you navigate this emotional journey.

Assessing Quality of Life

It can be difficult to know when a pet is nearing the end of their life. We use a combination of tools, including:

  • Quality of Life Scales – These allow us to evaluate pain levels, mobility, appetite, and overall comfort.
  • Daily Journal – Keeping track of your pet’s good days vs. bad days can help in making informed decisions.
  • Veterinary Guidance – Regular check-ins with your veterinarian can provide reassurance and professional insight.

Palliative and Hospice Care

When curative treatments are no longer effective or appropriate, palliative care becomes the focus. This may include:

  • Pain management
  • Nutritional support
  • Hygiene and mobility assistance
  • Emotional support for both pets and their families

Every pet’s situation is unique, and we will work closely with you to develop a personalized care plan that honors your pet’s needs and your family’s wishes.

Euthanasia: A Humane and Compassionate Choice

When quality of life declines and suffering outweighs joy, euthanasia can be a gentle, peaceful way to say goodbye. Our veterinarians will walk you through the process with empathy, answer your questions, and ensure your pet is surrounded by love and comfort.

We offer in-clinic euthanasia services in a private, serene space. We also offer at-home euthanasia services — please contact our office to make arrangements.

Grief Support and Resources

The loss of a pet can be overwhelming. We’re here to provide support and offer resources such as:

  • Grief counseling referrals
  • Memorial options (paw prints, fur clippings, urns)
  • Online support communities
